We have had some incredible donations lately. We don’t have a photo of the Cartagena gown, but check out the catalogue photo and all the lovely details:
- strapless A-line with sweetheart neckline
- asymmetrical rouched bust with lace applique on bodice
- side bow at natural waist
- cathedral train
- fabric: silky gaza
It won’t last, ladies, make an appointment and see if this is your wedding dress!
Shannon got married earlier this year and she has already decided to donate her gorgeous Ella Rosa dress! Lucky us! And, maybe LUCKY YOU if you come into the shop at the right time and snap it up before someone else does. It’s a size 14 and the designer’s photo is below. Make an appointment today — that fabulous train deserves another trip down the aisle!
Ladies, we have a gorgeous Size 8 Sottero Badgley in the house. Would you take a look at that train! Today’s featured gown is white and hemmed to fit 5’5″, courtesy of a very generous donor. Make an appointment to try it on!
This size 6 ivory Justin Alex gown is bursting with romance to make your groom sigh and topped with lots of sweetness to make your mama cry. Lace and beadwork in the bodice and skirt grace both the front and back of the dress.
And, speaking of mama, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there! We wouldn’t be here without you!
This lovely frock was donated by a generous lady who was also kind enough to have it drycleaned as well! The bodice has very flattering ruching at the front and gorgeous button detailing at the back. The pickups in the skirt and no beads/designs to contend with make it a breeze for hemming (just take up/down as necessary). This one won’t last long at the shop, make an appointment to try it on!
Thanks to recent publicity, we have new arrivals at the shop! Photos will be posted over the coming days, stay tuned for more…
For now, feast your eyes on this sizzling Sophia Tolli in Size 6. It’s diamond white with a corset back and vine-style beadwork that continue into the train. The lines in the bodice are fluid and graceful.
Thank you to the generous donor who gave us this gorgeous frock! Make an appointment to try it on before it leaves the shop. Our donated gowns tend to sell very quickly!
We had the delight of meeting Lorraine on the weekend, who brought us her stunning Sofia Tolli “Anne” dress. Thanks so much to the beautiful bride for her kindness and generosity in donating this spectacular piece! She also sent in these great pics taken my family and friends so that we could share this arrival with you! Congratulations Lorraine – we’re quite sure your dress will find a new home VERY quickly!
We have a (bridal) size 6/8 pink Joli gown in the house, courtesy of a generous individual donor. It has a corset back, which means alterations are probably not required, with beadwork accents in the design. Click on the thumbnails for a closer look and make an appointment! Our busy season is coming up soon, and dresses like this won’t last long at the shop.
We’ve had some gorgeous donations lately, this is just one of them. The sheer overlay in this light ivory strapless Ella Rosa gown has modern, soft lines: delicate horizontal pleating that runs all the way to the corset back, with vertical pleating in the bodice. The beadwork and empire waistline make it easy to accessorize, and it’s simple to bustle this train to make it dance-friendly. (Not all dresses have simple bustles!) Click on any of the thumbnails below to view the dress more closely.
Last but certainly not least: our generous donor had the dress cleaned, so it’s truly prêt-à-porter. This dress won’t last long in the shop, ladies, make an appointment and call off the gown search!
If your wedding style is of the urban persuasion and you’re searching for ‘glam’ over ‘princess’, have we got a treat for you!
This light ivory Size 4 Maggie Sottero strapless couture gown is fitted to hug your figure and guaranteed to knock your groom’s socks off! It was generously donated over the weekend from Ottawa (the wedding was on the beach in Vancouver) and due to arrive at the shop this evening, where I predict it will stay for about 20 minutes…
If this is the gown you have in mind, you’d better be quick and make an appointment!

The trim:
This lovely Lucca frock charmed me to pieces the last time I was working in the shop. The cap sleeves really do it for me — they’re feminine, classic, and a refreshing alternative to the sea of sleeveless/strapless. I’ve been telling brides about cap sleeves for ages, but didn’t have any examples on hand to show how wonderful they can be. You can buy a strapless dress at The Brides’ Project and have cap sleeves added by one of our talented seamstresses for flair. A light, semi-opaque sleeve material such as you see here is paired well with a soft hair accent such as a flower or feathers. Get creative with your dress, there are many options available to suit your personal style!
Are you having a summer wedding and wishing for a sleeveless dress with straps but find straps uncomfortable and high-maintenance? Consider a halter, of which there are a number of varieties that accentuate the positive(s) — either with a higher panel in the front, a deep V neckline, a more modest V neckline, a streamlined corset, and with halter straps in an array of widths to suit.
Personally, I never used to be a fan of halter necklines because I’m always trying to hide my arms and neck, but what I have found is that certain halters can actually be MORE flattering than sleeveless tops:
- they fit better under the arm, i.e., no pinching and more air flow, due to the angle (diagonal instead of horizontal) — see here
- the dress stays put!
- it makes a deeper v-neckline possible
- it gives lots of options at the back, a lot more than strapless dresses — example 1, example 2 (you can decide how much back to show)
- it can suit a smaller cup size, too — example
- you can accessorize the neckline — example
Halter gowns come in a range of fabrics, too, from elegant weightless sheaths or traditional heavier materials over crinoline.
It’s not easy to photograph a halter dress because it doesn’t have much form without a body in it, so here are some examples of bridal styles available: http://www.bride.ca/wedding-ideas/index.cfm/2009/8/19/Bridal-Fashion-Halter-Wedding-Dresses
This size 16 Mon Cheri was given to us by one of our cherished donors already cleaned and ready for the next lucky bride! Detailing on the dress can be viewed by clicking on any of the thumbnails to zoom in.
(Shhhh… don’t tell the drycleaners we told you this, but many dresses are machine washable! Including this one…)
Remember what I said about ruching? From this angle and the way it was ruched/pleated, you’d never know this dress was an 18. But it is! Donated AND cleaned by a generous newlywed, it is yet another example of women helping women, and in turn helping those with cancer.
Every little bit counts: from donating dresses, to buying from our shop, participating in fundraising, using services from our website, or referring us to others, it all helps us towards our common goal of fighting this disease, by third-party fundraising through our services or by donating directly to our beneficiaries. Thank you for helping us help them.
Wow, Igigi sure knows how to dress a curvy woman! This material drapes BEAUTIFULLY and is so comfy and soft to the touch that you may want to wear this on your honeymoon, too! It is perfect for a destination wedding: takes next-to-no room in your bag and is low-maintenance.
One of the major features of this dress is its unstructuredness (I just made that word up, but it makes sense!), however, if you prefer more structure, it is very easy to add some, either with undergarments or the assistance of an alterations specialist (we have those, too!). This dress has only silver embellishments at the straps and the waist, which makes it easy to accessorize. It was given to us by one of our generous individual donors (there’s a letter included), and, like all the dresses in our shop, the price is right. Make an appointment and c’mon down!
I’ve been remiss in posting photos of dresses we have in the shop in larger sizes (14 and up). Lest our dear readers think we don’t cover this range, I’m going to post more photos of dresses from our 14+ room — and yes, we have a whole room of size 14 to around 28 (?). I’ll start with this white strapless dress by Mikaella in 14 that has a pickup skirt and FEELS LIKE BUTTER. Seriously!
With the corset back, this dress will be less likely to need alterations, just loosen or tighten the ties as needed — a big advantage of the corset over a zipper. Hemming? Not a problem — the pickup skirt actually gives you plenty of freedom because you can raise or lower the hem quite easily with fewer stitches. This frock is wonderful to look at and easy to work with, it just needs you! Make an appointment and try it on.
It may very well be that by the time I hit ‘post’, this dress will have left the building, too… it’s a head-turner: a sassy yet divine white Pronovias fitted gown in size 12. Wear this and watch people drop their ice cream, walk into streetlamps, honk their horns, and spontaneously break into applause! Just like in a commercial.
I was at the shop when it was donated, and I can tell you it is brand-new and can’t wait to be tried on — with care, of course. We’re preserving it in a gown bag but you can see the details by clicking on any of the thumbnails below.
A heartfelt thank-you to a very generous lady who drove from out of town to deliver it to our shop!
We get some gorgeous donations at The Brides’ Project, and here’s another example: a champagne-coloured frock purchased from Anne Jean-Michel in Montreal. It’s a size 8, in a light-weight material (perfect for a summer wedding) with a zippered back and flower detailing at the hip. The fabric drapes beautifully and if you’re not into stiff crinolines, this dress might be for you! Click on any of the photos to view larger.
On Wednesday last week I got ‘the call’… the call that an incredibly generous new donor had a shop full of goodies for us! Wahoo! Judy who just retired to run a lovely B&B in Paris (more details coming!), operated a bridal shop in Paris, ON called Bridal Fashions by Jacri for 40 years. Upon closing… she needed a home for her inventory. Thank goodness she found us!
Here’s just a sneak peak. Judy offered us EVERYTHING from tiaras, shoes, veils, cake toppers, crinolines, unity candles, mothers/bridesmaid dresses… you name it, it’s there. And about 50 absolutely stunning gowns. You can see more on the Shopping – Dresses page. We’re just getting started on getting pics up, so please be patient. I’m happy to report that many dresses are size 14 and up, where we really needed some help with our collection. This includes some destination type dresses.
Too much wedding planning and seeing red? Check this out!
This is a Sincerity gown in size 16, and the colour is actually burgundy. It’s STUNNING, and hot hot HOT! We’ve been asked about alternate coloured gowns (per Gail’s posting below), and yowza, this baby is an eye-catcher.
Once in a blue moon, we’ll have someone in the shop looking for a wedding dress that’s neither white nor ivory. We have a few of those! The one with the most colour, currently, is a size 12 Maggie Sottero with an overlay that is… lavender? Lilac? Not sure how to describe this colour, as it’s more muted than purple. (Normally I would photograph the back of the dress, too, but I hadn’t done up the buttons as we were short on time.) The dress has a side gather with beadwork at the top of the bodice, detail at the side and trim at the hem. Click on either photo to enlarge.
If you’re a non-traditional bride who has this shade in your wedding palette, make an appointment and check it out.
Thanks to our lovely volunteer, Mirela, for doubling as our dress model!
It’s a running joke here at The Brides’ Project that whenever I post a photo of a dress, Helen tells me the dress has been sold. It doesn’t even seem to matter how long a dress has been at the shop, by the time it gets the internet spotlight, it’s been spoken for. This is not such a bad thing, but it’s weird, don’t you think?
Let’s test this phenomenon once again! I was at The Brides’ Project this past SATURDAY, just a few days ago, which means there was only one day in which someone could have bought it — Sunday. If someone walked in and bought this dress Sunday, mark my words I will not eat any more chocolate until Easter. And Easter’s a long ways off!
For the record, there is no label called “Blushing Bride” as far as I know, I made it up for the title of this post and to introduce the dress’s unusual shade. I don’t know who the designer is, but I do know it’s a size 10. This is one of my favourite dresses in the 10/12 room (blimey — in the whole shop, actually!), and I’ve never understood why no-one’s snapped it up. It has a zippered back, an overlay with diagonal detailing, lightweight fabric, and a sweep train. It’s low-maintenance! Not a stiff crinoline to be found under there. And if you’re the same height as our lovely volunteer Mirela who is modelling the dress, you won’t even need to hem it.
In a sea of white and ivory, this dress stands out. It’s tough to describe the colour, and with the mixed lighting in this photo it may appear slightly different in person, but the closest I could come to a colour is ‘blush’. It would best suit someone with a very fair complexion, I think. It’s not a warmer tone like a deep champagne, nor is it a cooler tone towards mauve, but somewhere in-between. Click on the thumbnails below to take a closer look, make an appointment and try it on!
