It’s Relay time again! That’s right, we’re not just about pretty wedding dresses, we’re here to fundraise and commit ourselves to the cause — and that’s kicking cancer to the curb! We do it by volunteering our time and skills, selling wedding dresses, and participating in fundraising events. Our big June event is the annual Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, and this year we’re taking part on Friday, June 17 in Sunnybrook Park. (See here for previous Relay For Life posts.)

Why we Relay
The Brides’ Project has been involved with Relay for Life for the last 4 years, and each year, our contribution grows.
We strongly believe in, and support the efforts of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life because every step we take in Relay raises money to help the Canadian Cancer Society save lives. The Society has provided millions in funding for cancer research, and combined with efforts from the Odette Cancer Center at Sunnybrook, we know they will make a huge difference.
Every year we are encouraged and inspired by the fact that our dollars make a difference. We hear more stories of success and survival, and we hope that in our lifetimes, cancer will be beaten.
Join us in the fight against cancer by supporting our team now. It’s easy – just click on the blue “Support” button to make a donation to the event.

Last year we earned the TOP SPOT as a team, raising more than $11,000! See some our photos here. We were also part of the media campaign for Relay For Life 2010.
In 2009 we were also a very visible team — all night long! Check out some of our photos from Relay For Life 2009 here.
You can help fire up our stalwart team by sponsoring us, or an individual on our team: The Brides’ Project Relay For Life Team (Donations over $20 get an tax deductible receipt.)

The Brides’ Project raises money all year round for local and national cancer charities, but we are concentrating our efforts this time to raise $10,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society by participating in Relay For Life — this is our third year in a row. We can do it with your help! You can join us, sponsor us, or buy a luminary to remember a loved one.

A week ago our Bride Army of chic volunteers strutted and sashayed for the cameras in boots to promote the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event that’s happening in two weeks: June 11.
Why boots? Because we’d LOVE to give cancer the BOOT! Photographer Dean Oros has a preview of the pictures he shot in Dundas Square, check them out here:
Meanwhile, CTV was there, too! You might’ve seen a clip of us on the 6pm news that day (Thursday, May 20). We also got on page 6 of the weekend issue of Metro. (Click on the link above to view larger.)
The Brides’ Project is a proud supporter of the Relay For Life event: we’ve got two teams relaying all night long. You can join us, or sponsor us!

See you at the track!
How did May sneak up on us so fast? Relay is next month, and we’d love to take this opportunity to not only raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, but meet other supporters, new brides, brides-to-be, cancer survivors, caregivers, volunteers, and anyone else taking part in this wonderful annual event. For those who attended last year, you might remember we were highly visible — and how could we not be, in these glow-in-the-dark cream puff dresses? Our all-night crew chatted (and swooshed) our way around the track in polyester from 7pm to 7am and met loads of friendly folk. We would love to meet you, too! Join us, or if you’ve already signed up for Relay For Life, look for us in the white dresses and say hello!

On behalf of The Brides’ Project, we’d like to welcome YOU… our friends, our brides, and community to join us for Relay for Life 2010!
We began our involvement in 2008, and this Canadian Cancer Society event is remarkable. From the Survivor’s Lap, to the lighting of the Luminaries… and walking in the dark around a circle of candles lit for loved ones… you can’t help absorbing the profound sense of community amongst those in attendance to help the fight against cancer.
For 2010, we have doubled our efforts with 2 teams, and we invite you to join us or provide a pledge to help us achieve our fundraising goal of $10,000 here. Just search for “Brides” and you’ll find our 2 teams… you can join us, sponsor us, or buy a luminary to remember a loved one.

In 2008, Dean Oros Photography was there as a volunteer and his work has since been selected as a part of Photosensitive: Cancer Connections. This is a cross-Canada initiative that includes works by prominent photographers who have captured images that depict being touched by cancer in an effort to raise funds and awareness. Here is one of his pieces, from the series called “Angelic”. You can also contact Dean directly to order prints or invite him to provide you with his exquisite talent in wedding photography. His work is not only widely recognized, but I have to say he’s one of the most incredible people to work with.
We’d like to thank Dean for his stunning art, and at the same time, really hope to see YOU involved in this event as well! Being involved in events like this gives us hope as well… and in the 6 years we have been around, we have reason for it. Organizations like the Canadian Cancer Society are having their own impact, and the Survivors Lap has more and more members every year as a result. Come out and see!
For more info about how you can take part, please visit the Canadian Cancer Society website or email us.
Tonight, six of our staff enjoyed Quality Comedy at Hugh’s room… a comedy night fundraiser for Camp Quality, and presented them with a cheque for $10,000. That’s a lot of zeros… yahoo!
Our focus on this night was to offer a donation but also to thank our volunteers for all their time, and tireless efforts. Tonight I was joined by Vanessa, Gail, Mirela, Dorothy and Melody including spouses, friends, and associates to celebrate all the hard work everyone has made to make this contribution a reality. Our gown operations are completely volunteer operated… and all these women dedicate hours upon hours of time in multiple ways. They help operate the shop, organize events, run the website, respond to inquiries, help find sources for printing and other needs… and inspire others to take part as well! Their contributions are priceless, and appreciated.
Of course… our thanks also go to many others who make it possible; the generosity of salons, designers and individual brides who have parted with their gowns… and all the beautiful new brides cherishing the gowns they have found here!
Thank you ALL.
Look forward to upcoming updates about our 2nd Quarter activities with the Canadian Cancer Society and Relay for Life event on June 11, 2010. We hope to keep those zeros coming in terms of our contribution through this event. We’ll have 2 teams, all decked out… and our usual enthusiastic group of supporters to make it FUN. We’ll also be inviting YOU to take part as well!
Relay For Life was a blast! More photos to come after we recover!
Update: it was announced on Saturday morning at the closing ceremonies that more than $200,000 was raised, and according to the event homepage this doubles the Relay 2009 campaign goal of $100,000! Thank you to everyone who sponsored!

Relay For Life takes place at Forest Hill Memorial Park on June 12, from 7pm to 7am. That’s two weeks from tomorrow!
If you’d like to sponsor any of our listed volunteers on the team page, you can do so by clicking on their names. We also have five placeholders if people would like to join our team.
If you’ve never heard of Relay For Life, here’s the scoop:
Relay For Life is a 12 hour, non-competitive, overnight event. Teams of 10 people – family, friends, neighbours, co-workers – take turns walking around a track to raise funds to make cancer history.
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life is more than just a fundraiser. It is an opportunity to get together with family and friends and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back in the hope of finding a cure for this terrible disease.
Relay is fun, fulfilling, and your participation gives strength to our mission to eradicate cancer. Walk with us in this inspirational 12-hour overnight event.
The Brides’ Project is a few people short of the full complement of 10, so if you’d like to join us, contact us for more details.
Here’s a video of The Brides’ Project Team from 2008.
We’ll have a tent set up, plenty of snacks and drinks to keep us going, and it’ll be a lot of fun staying up all night together! If you can’t join us, we would love your sponsorship of any amount.
Mark your calendars, folks! This year’s Relay For Life event is coming up June 12, 2009. It’s a couple of months away, but this is a heads up to remind people about it and give plenty of notice for fundraising efforts. The Brides’ Project will lend our support, in one form or another.
