Exercise to Help Cancer Patients
One thing that has seemed to ring true about those that are sick or have been diagnosed with cancer is that keeping high energy levels and exercising seems to help with treatments. Exercise can serve as good complement for treatments of all cancers although it may prove difficult for some. Those who have a common cancer, like prostate cancer, may have an easier time being able to exercise than a patient with an aggressive cancer, like mesothelioma, that makes it a challenge to breath. A health care professional should always be consulted before starting an exercise regime.
Not a Very Energetic Time
Having treatments such as chemotherapy are very taxing on one’s whole body. Though everyone is different, the majority of people are not overly energetic at this time. After initial treatments, when one’s body begins to recover, keeping energy levels high is a good idea. The National Cancer Institute has even said via their website that physical activity is great for helping recover from and fighting cancer. Any type of physical activity, especially exercising can help to aide in having healthier bones and stronger muscles and joints. These can help to make some treatments less trying on the body.
How Much Should One Exercise?
The National Cancer Institute has said that physical activity is recommended for at least 30 minutes at a time for 5 or more days a week. If time is an issue it is recommended to engage in more rigorous physical activity for 15 or 20 minutes at a time for 3 days a week. This exercise strategy is healthy for any adult.
Exercise to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Exercising is recommended for all adults in order to promote good health. Even if you perceive yourself to be healthy it is a good idea to make sure that you engage in exercise for the recommended allotment of time in order to maintain good cardiovascular health. It can also help strengthen joints and bones that could become a problem at some point later on down the line. Many studies have linked specific cancers, such as colon and breast cancer with a lack of physical exercise. Evidence has suggested that physical exercise reduced the risk of breast cancer for women of premenopausal and postmenopausal ages. However, the link between colon cancer and a lack of physical exercise is apparent in the BMI, or Body Mass Index, of the average patient with the ailment. So, it is a good idea for anyone to be conscious and mindful of their health and to remain active to avoid potential health risks.

We received a lovely email from Theresa, a newlywed and a huge supporter of The Brides’ Project: she sourced three of her wedding vendors here!
My name is Theresa and I guess you could say that I am a huge supporter of TBP! I bought my wedding gown and veil from TBP back in July 2010 and I was married in May 2011 to my husband Abner.
~ I also had my alterations done by Pom (loved her, she always made me laugh)!
~ My flowers were done by Kim (so sweet and very creative)!
~ And photographs by Gail (from noon till midnight, she is truly one in a million)! My wedding experience was nothing short of wonderful!
We are absolutely tickled to read mail like this, to know we’ve been able to help brides in not just one way but several, all the while raising money for cancer charities. Our goal for 2011 was $60,000 (already reached and soon to be exceeded) and we wouldn’t be able to do this without brides like Theresa, who is also donating back her dress and veil!
Thank you, Theresa, and congratulations! FYI, her gown is back to be enjoyed again!
Below is the lovely Natalya with her handsome hubby Brett. Congrats you two! You look so happy, and obviously had a super fun wedding day. And we LOVE the shoes!!! This dress was actually worn by Alyssa Milano for a wedding movie… and now the story of the dress grows with Natalya’s wonderful day.
She wrote us a lovely message; “I am writing to thank you for helping me find the absolutely perfect dress for an amazing price! We had a fantastic wedding and everyone complimented my dress a lot!” Those words are music to our ears, and she has promised to donate the dress back when she’s had a chance to enjoy it some more! planning all types of celebrations, The Occasion Sensation knows how to make your wedding day meaningful, magical and memorable!
We did it! And we did it through rain and wind and layers upon layers of clothing — including veils and crinolines! As always, we drew lots of curious attention with our outfits, but there were plenty of others who dressed up, too.

It was great to see so many people out on a Sunday morning (after Nuit Blanche, where people were up all night long) showing their community spirit and support.

I shot some video, but it’s pretty shaky!
The Brides’ Project is a proud participant in this year’s annual event supporting the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to fund breast cancer research and health promotion initiatives. It is the largest single-day, volunteer-led event in Canada in support of the breast cancer cause. This year (its 20th) it will take place on Sunday, October 2.
The Brides’ Project team of volunteers will be doing a 5km walk at the Toronto site, the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. Click here for a full list of locations.)
The funds raised go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. For more information about the Foundation, its work, and where the money goes in your region, visit www.cbcf.org.
If you’d like to sponsor us, our team page is here. You can help us by sponsoring the team, an individual volunteer, or by joining us at the site on October 2. Whichever way you choose, please know that we appreciate your support!
Stacey and Sascha got married earlier this summer at a beautiful ceremony on Manitoulin Island. Congratulations!!! We are proud to say that the beautiful bride acquired her gown here at The Brides’ Project. We have even better news… it will be coming back … once it has traveled half way around the world for a second ceremony in Australia! It will truly become one of the dresses that has earned membership in the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Dress.”
They also came up with a brilliant idea… to have a wishing well for donations to The Brides’ Project, and within a few weeks of their wedding, we received a most generous cheque to help in our fundraising efforts. (On that note, we’re proud to say we just contributed their funds along with a nice big chunk of our own to the Terry Fox Run today!)
Thank you so much Stacey and Sascha for making us a big part in your weddings. We all wish you safe and happy travels and a laughter-filled future together.
This Sunday is the annual Terry Fox Run, and The Brides’ Project is a proud participant in the 31st year:

The Terry Fox Run is an innovative and volunteer-led event, all-inclusive, non-competitive, with no corporate sponsorship, incentives or fundraising minimums. To date, over $550 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world.
On Sunday, Helen and some of the volunteers can be spotted at Wilket Creek Park, and Gail is taking her fundraising feet up to the beautiful shores of Lake Huron. Would you like to join us? The event is relaxed and you can choose to walk, run, bike, or rollerblade 5km or 10kms — whichever you prefer. You can sign up on the day, even.
If you’d like to participate, there are 13 run sites in Toronto (most are 5km/10km) — see here for the links: http://www.terryfox.org/Run/Ontario.html

Enjoy a fun autumn Sunday afternoon outside and support cancer research at the same time!
Once again you’ll see our lovely volunteers at the National Bridal Show, and if you happen to be passing by the shop on your way, we do have a few free passes left. Don’t forget that there’s lots of free cake and the party bus to explore when you get hyped up on sugar.
This year they also have a Groom’s Resting Zone that apparently has buckets of ice cold beer. Now that’s a great incentive to take that man of yours to the show! Send him off to get you cake while you enjoy a beer.
Don’t forget to visit us …
They had a great event in Sioux Narrows, ON. And we’re delighted on our end to help brides from all over… not just the Toronto region! Our shop is here in TO, but we receive donations from all over Canada, and the same can be said for the clientele buying dresses from us.
Three members of the brides’ family were diagnosed with cancer within proximity to her wedding. We’re happy to report that everyone is doing well, and we hope that a part of that success is due to the great organizations out there (who we support) who are trying to beat cancer.
Catherine and Nathan… you had a beautiful day, and we wish you a wonderful and healthy future together with your families. (Photo credits to Michael Farrow, of Tofino BC).

Can you believe that it’s “Back to School” time already?! It’s a little scary that summer is already drawing to a close. On that note, it’s the last weekend that many people flee the city in favour of a country respite, including our staff and clientele.
Our weekend hours will be:
Saturday September 3rd: 10-5pm
Sunday September 4th: CLOSED
Regular weekend hours resume the following week.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy long weekend!
The most lovely Tarin Olding is a great friend of The Brides’ Project, and Helen had the distinct pleasure of performing her marriage to Donny in October 2008.
Tarin recently wrote to say, “Hi Helen, I have been growing my hair for almost 4 1/2 years – ever since Donny proposed!
I am now ready to chop it ALL OFF!!!! So I thought why not try and raise some money for a charity that helps kids with cancer! As a bonus they make sure the hair gets to a company that donates wigs to kids with cancer related hair loss!
Please help me to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Foundation’s research fund (C17 Research Network) that helps kids at all 17 children’s hospitals in Canada.” Here is the link to her fundraising page: http://childhoodcancer.akaraisin.com/smallhands/tarinolding
And Tarin has a LOT of hair! Check out her beautiful mane, that will be used to offer wigs AT NO COST to children fighting cancer. Way to go Tarin, we’re behind you 100%.
Congratulations to the lovely Lindsay, who married Steve at a beautiful villa last month in Tuscany.
“It was absolutely magical,” she said, and of that we have no doubt! (Ahhh, dreaming of Italy!)
We are so pleased to have contributed a small part of the magic — Lindsay bought her dress at The Brides’ Project, and had it altered by Pearl, who also added straps. It looks beautiful, flowy, and perfect for a summer wedding.
Thank you, Lindsay! We wish you and Steve many years of wedded bliss

married in Tuscany
Joanna bought her dress from The Brides’ Project back in March of this year, and was just married on August 12. We are delighted that she thought of us and passed along these photos from her wedding day.
Congratulations, Joanna! We wish you and your hubby all the happiness in the world!
We’d like to extend a huge Thank You to Julie of Julianne’s Bridal in Goderich. She dropped by last week with a great assortment of wedding gowns and some bridesmaid and other outfits. For those in the Goderich area, check out her shop at http://juliannesbridal.co.cc/
We greatly appreciate your generosity Julie!
We received another gown donation that made its way down a Caribbean aisle (Barbados), and is now ready to make another bride just as happy on her wedding day. To try it on, just make a quick and easy appointment online.
A big thank you goes out to Tina, the lovely lady who donated this sleek Maggie Sottero. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
We are thrilled to be the recipients of a gorgeous gown from a generous bride who brought it back from Barbados! The strapless ivory gown has a sweep train with diagonal ruching and happy Caribbean memories
This dress won’t last long in the shop, ladies, make an appointment to try it on.
We’d like to thank Jamie and her husband for sharing their joy with us and with the next bride and groom on their big day, while supporting our beneficiaries.
We have had some incredible donations lately. We don’t have a photo of the Cartagena gown, but check out the catalogue photo and all the lovely details:
- strapless A-line with sweetheart neckline
- asymmetrical rouched bust with lace applique on bodice
- side bow at natural waist
- cathedral train
- fabric: silky gaza
It won’t last, ladies, make an appointment and see if this is your wedding dress!
Jaclyn just said “I Do!” to Joshua in a dress from The Brides’ Project! We love, love, love Jaclyn’s retro wedding style and how smashing the whole wedding party looks!
Lucky for us, Jaclyn’s donating her dress back to us and you can customize it, too! Its simplicity is ideal for adding your own personal touch. Make an appointment and see for yourself.
Thank you for your generosity, Jaclyn! We wish you and Joshua much happiness!
